Every third ton of steel in the world is obtained from non-ferrous metal scrap. What is the role of metal scrap and waste in the world and in Kazakhstan?

Scrap of ferrous and non-ferrous metals is gaining popularity. According to Turar Zholmaganbet, Deputy Chairman of the Industrial Development Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, this is due to the Paris Climate Agreement. It was accepted over 5 years ago. More than a hundred countries have decided to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and Kazakhstan has taken on obligations.

“And secondly, the concept of “carbon tax” has appeared, in simple words - those goods where natural resources were used the most, as well as emissions, will be subject to an additional tax. If we use more and more natural raw materials and CO2 emissions, our products will be less competitive when exporting abroad. And from an environmental point of view, you can look at: when you get 1 ton of steel from iron ore, 1.5 tons of CO2 emissions occur. And when we get it from scrap and ferrous metal waste, emissions are literally 8 kg. Accordingly, the world practice of steel production will consume ferrous scrap more and more. Even today, every third ton of steel produced in the world is made from ferrous scrap,” the speaker shared his statistics.
