The project “Automation of the management of the Unified Electric Power System of Kazakhstan” is the first project of the intellectual power system not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the entire post-Soviet space.
Bakytzhan Kazhiev, Chairman of the Board of KEGOC, explained the advantages of the intelligent power system in the Central Communications Service.
According to Bakytzhan Kazhiev, the project includes three components.
A control system based on synchrophasor technology (WAMS / WACS), which will increase the transmission of electricity over the existing network by increasing observability and the introduction of new network control algorithms in real time;
Automatic control of frequency and power (AFRC), which will provide a more efficient use of power of domestic power plants;
Centralized Anti-Emergency Control System (DSPA), which will ensure a reduction in the volume of consumer disconnection in case of technological violations.
“All participants in the electricity sector will be able to enjoy the benefits of a highly efficient energy system. The state will receive a reliable electricity infrastructure, which creates the conditions for economic development. Grid companies are an opportunity to more efficiently use network capacity, and power plants use generating capacity with maximum efficiency. The consumer, through the use of smart meters, solar panels on the roofs, batteries and electric vehicles, will not only be able to optimize their own expenses, but will also get the opportunity for additional income from selling excess electricity, ”the speaker said.
Another technology that can be an important part of the smart grid is direct current transmission.
“Compared with traditional lines, the DC line will allow transmitting 4–5 times more power and will also provide controlled transmission of electricity over considerable distances,” explained Bakytzhan Kazhiev.
This line will provide the necessary throughput capacity of the backbone network in the long-term strategic direction of North-South.
“The needs in the power grid infrastructure in this area will be met for both domestic consumers and for the realization of the export and transit potential of the Unified Energy System of Kazakhstan,” B. Kazhiyev said.
