During the meeting with journalists in Akorda, President Nursultan Nazarbayev explained why he considers the international situation to be similar to the Caribbean crisis of 1962, reports ortcom.kz referring to MIA "Kazinform".

“The Summit of the Asia-Europe Forum in Brussels was attended by representatives from 55 countries. Everyone spoke about economic integration, about rapprochement. And no one said that today there are huge obstacles. This is the sanctions standoff between America and Russia, and Europe with Russia, and Europe itself with America. In the East, Sino-US trade relations are unpleasant. Nobody talks about it as if nothing is. And all act, speak, speak. Therefore, I had to make corrections and say: “What are we talking about so calmly, quietly, when everything we say can’t come true if this standoff continues”. Why I compared with the Caribbean crisis? What does the approach of military equipment to the borders of Russia, to the Baltic states, in the North, in Southern Europe, the supply of weapons of the same Poland? What it is? Is this a kind of war preparation? Naturally, Russia takes retaliatory measures, puts something in its defense ... ”- said N.Nazarbayev.

The head of state recalled that the Caribbean crisis, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war, arose in 1962 due to the fact that the Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba. When the United States demanded that these missiles be removed, the USSR demanded that the United States remove its missiles from Turkey.

The President stressed that the great powers were always responsible for the fate of mankind. Therefore, today the United States, Russia, China and the European Union should get together, perhaps at the Astana site, to discuss all their questions. Russia and China have expressed their consent, work continues with the countries of the West. N.Nazarbayev also called for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, without reliance on third parties.
